Erratic behavior of crosshair
Hello,
Our transcribing team is using .mpg files created from .vob with VOB2MPG and .wav files created by a Marantz solid state recorder. We are experiencing several problems that we believe related:
Error 1: When pressing Ctrl+ SPACEBAR to resume playback, crosshair moves to the end of the media. This seems to happen after ELAN has been running for a while, perhaps 15 minutes or so. The crosshair hops a couple of times from the current scrollview to the beginning of the media, and then to the end of it.
Error 2: When the crosshair is allowed to reach the end of the scrollview, instead of switching smoothly to the next scrollview, it hops back and forth between the beginning of the transcript, the end of the transcript, the last scrollview, and some other random point. The jumping pattern is too fast to be sure, but those seems to be the points it hits. It starts out by flashing to the end then the beginning then the spot I where the transcriber was then it finally stops at the end. It only lasts a few seconds, but it seems the longer you work the worse it gets. Sometimes selection mode is turned on when this happens but this is not usually the case.
Error 3: The media get out of sync during transcription.
We have logs for errors 1 and 2 that I can email if someone wants to review them.
Thanks
Re: Erratic behavior of crosshair
This is difficult to explain let alone to solve. I have seen similar behavior once on an XP machine at our institute. So far we have not been able to discover what the cause is/was.
Does the same happen when you use e.g. one of the media files that can be downloaded from the ELAN download page (in other words could there be a relation with the encoding of the files)?
You may send the log files to me, maybe there is something useful in there (it wasn't the case here, but you never know). (han.sloetjes at mpi.nl)

Re: Re: Erratic behavior of crosshair
Thank you Han. At least two machines here are doing the same. Also, one of my transcribers says she thinks the video file gets out of sync with the crosshair while the audio file seems to be in sync. I do suspect the encoding by VOB2MPG has something to do with it... I will email you the logs separately, and also the info I can get on the mpg files, which does not include bitrate unfortunately. The VOB2MPG software is really easy to use but gives you no control over the encoding.
Thanks
Bruno
Re: Re: Re: Erratic behavior of crosshair
To give this some closure: Han noticed that the .wav audio file was being loaded as master media and suggested setting the video as master. This worked :-)
Thanks
Re: Erratic behavior of crosshair
Note that this also occurs in WAV-only EAF files (without video data). I have a couple of sessions without video data that I want to transcribe in ELAN, and this crosshair jumping around erratically is quite annoying. Is the actual cause of the problem known?
