any problems with mpeg2 ?

Posted by aherrmann at 2008-01-25 19:48

Hello all, has anyone encountered problems using mpeg2 in Elan? The guide for Elan and the use with sign languages warns to use mpeg2 and rather recommends mpg1, but doesn't really mention why. So far I used both types without problems, but I would like to make a decision in favour of mpeg2, as some videos definitely lack quality with the mpeg 1 format. Any support that helps to make a decision is welcome. Thank you very much. Annika

Yes, it would be good to know what kind of problems people have encountered while using mpeg-2.

Just one remark about the warning in the ELAN guide. The intention is not so much to discourage the use of mpeg-2 (it's quality is often necessary) but rather to be aware of possible technical problems.
To use mpeg-2 on MacOS Apple's MPEG-2 Component is needed. This seems to work well.
On Windows a mpeg-2 codec for Windows Media Player needs to be installed. There are many manufacturers of such codecs and they are sometimes installed with a video editing program or a software DVD-Player. It is impossible to know and test them all, but some of the known problems are: a lack of frame accuracy and strange artifacts when playing mpg-1 (only sound, no images, no slow-motion playback etc.).
This is then out of the control of ELAN.

I have a problem with importing mpg file into ELAN. The video is taken by Sony Handycam DCR-SR80 60GB Hard Drive Digital Camcorder. The specs for this model says that the video capture format is MPEG-2. When I import the video into my PC laptop, it creates two separate files for each video clip: one has extension .mpg and the other .modd. When I try to open these video clips in ELAN, the only file that ELAN recognizes is .mpg, so I can see the video, but not .modd, so i cannot hear it. I guess the .modd file is a corresponding sound file. I don't know how to solve this problem. I really hope it's something simple Should I look for ways to convert this mysterious .modd file into something recognizable like .wav or .mp3? Or should i install mpeg-2 codec and see if it works. By the way, both Windows Media Player and QuickTime Player on my laptop refuse to play any of those video clips. hoping, elain
