export in SALT format?

Posted by Bruno at 2008-01-15 18:01

Hello,

Is it possible to export in SALT (Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts) format. I guess one could export to CHAT and then convert CHAT to SALT but is there a more straightforward way?
Thank you

Would be possible, with a little help. I'm not too familiar with the SALT application. From the examples on the website I understand that SALT stores transcripts in a kind of database files, part of which are binary? Would an export to the single text, the format of which is described in the document at http://www.saltsoftware.com/training/transcription/TranConvSummary.pdf, be of any use? Are there other good documents on the format?

Are there any supporters for this request?

Thank you Han, diligent as always.
I guess one could just use ELAN to transcribe using any SALT conventions that apply to utterances, then export as text as you suggest, then fill in headers and other stuff by hand... alternatively, export as CHAT and then SALT can convert from CHAT files.
Thanks again. Great software.

As you already mentioned, the alternative solution via CHAT is possible through either the export to CHAT format from ELAN or via the elan2chat command/script that has been developed by the creators of the CLAN tools.
Direct export to SALT's format under the conditions you described would be fairly straightforward. It would be nice to have some more information about the format without having to install the demo version etc. E.g. :02 seems to indicate 2 seconds; does SALT support milliseconds and which notation is used for that? What about Unicode?

Sorry it took me so long to find answers to your qs Han. According to Ann Nockerts, at SALT customer support:
"SALT does not support milliseconds. We do have a Unicode version of SALT but it is not the version we release because it won't run on older computers running Windows 98. But the next version we probably won't care about that so we'll release the Unicode version. In the meantime, we only supply the Unicode version if requested."
HTH
Thanks
Bruno
