Relative link for media file?

Posted by thomas_schmidt at 2007-10-11 12:45

Hi,<br><br>is it possible to have a relative link instead of an absolute one to specify Media URL attribute? I'd like to generate ELAN files which point to sound files in the parent folder. When I create the file with the tool, the link is always absolute.<br><br>Thanks for your help,<br><br>Thomas<br><br><br>

Currently ELAN does not support relative links, it only stores absolute paths. When opening a file this is what happens:
- find a media file at the specified (absolute) path
- if not found there, look for the file in the same directory as the eaf
- if not found there, look in a directory "media" in the parent directory (../media/)
This last location is hardwired and a rather arbitrary choice, of course.

So, if the Media URL attribute only contains the file name, the file will still be found if it is in the same directory as the eaf, or in ../media/. But when the transcription is saved by ELAN the URL will be converted to an absolute path.

True support for relative paths is on the to do list; several users have requested such feature and it makes sense in several situations.
It's difficult to say though when exactly this will be realized.
