The problem is very likely the format of the media file. Could it be it is an mpeg-2 file or a file type that requires QuickTime? ELAN tries to handle these situations gracefully, but sometimes errors within the media framework (in this case probably Windows Media Player) are not reported to ELAN. E.g. it is an mp4 file and the media player 'pretends' to be able to handle it, but in fact isn't.
There may be a clue in the log file, <user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log, as it is after trying to load such file.
You may send the file to me for inspection.
